What is CMA Foundation Course?

CMA Foundation course or exam is the First Level for students interested to pursue a career in Cost and Management Accountancy (CMA). CMA Foundation course is conducted by The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) also know as ICMA or ICWA.

What is the eligibility criteria to do the CMA Foundation Course?

Candidates who wish to pursue Cost and Management Accountancy (CMA) Course can register for CMA Foundation Course after appearing in the 12std or HSC (State Board or CBSE) examination but the candidates are only eligible to write the CMA Foundation exams once you clear your 12th Std. or HSC (State Board or CBSE).

CMA Foundation Exam Pattern

Candidates appearing for the CMA Foundation exam should know about the exam pattern to understand what to expect on the exam day.

  • CMA Foundation Exams are conducted twice in a year June and December.
  • Exam Medium – Hindi and English
  • Candidates must score at least 40% of marks in every paper and a minimum aggregate of 50% in all the papers to pass the CMA Foundation
  • No Negative marks
  • The maximum duration is 3 hours and each paper will be of 100 marks
  • Only one Examination for a day
  • CMA Foundation Exam has to be written manually

How much is the Registration Fees for CMA Foundation Course?

The Fees mentioned below is the registration fees both oral and postal, not coaching fees. The registration fees have to be paid through online to “The Institute of Cost Accountants of India” (ICAI). For more details about the fees visit www.icmai.in.

What is the Registration procedure for CMA Foundation?

Candidate has to register for Foundation Course by filling Online Registration Form available on ICMAI website www.icmai.in.

While filling the online form, candidates should take care of the following

  • After filling the Online Form pay the required fees online using the payment gateway.
  • On successful payment, the system will automatically generate the Form, which is to be printed.

There are a total of 4 subjects in CMA Foundation

The 4 subjects in CMA Foundation are,


Paper 1 - Fundamentals of Economics and Management
Paper 2 - Fundamentals of Accounting
Paper 3 - Fundamentals of Laws and Ethics
Paper 4 - Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics

CMA Foundation is mandatory for students who want to study CMA after completing 12th. Students who have completed degree can skip CMA Foundation and take up CMA Inter directly.

Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) conducts the exams in June and December every year. The exams in 2020 might be delayed due to coronavirus lockdown.

For June exams, 31st Jan is the last date for registration
For Dec exams, 30th July is the last date for registration
